VIDEO: Do you need to enroll in Medicare if you have COBRA?

Hi Folks! If you’re wondering if you need to enroll in Medicare if you have COBRA, either watch the following video that explains it, or read the post below.

So you’re retiring and you don’t have your Medicare set up yet and you don’t know what you need to do.

I’m here to answer those questions for you. My name’s Evan Fine, Medicare Specialist at Senior Resource Group and I will tell you exactly what you need to do when you retire as far as joining Medicare A and B.

People who take Cobra when they retire do still need to enroll in Medicare Part B immediately.

Cobra, like all retiree coverage, is considered secondary to Medicare.

So once you retire, whether you have Cobra whether it’s retiree coverage, you do need to have your Medicare Part A and B activated. That will be your primary payer.

If you take Cobra, Cobra will pay second to Medicare Part A and B, so you do need to have the A and B active.

Don’t let this happen to you…

Oftentimes, I get phone calls from clients and they want to know how come their claims aren’t being paid.

They’re on Cobra, and they’re over 65 years old… what happened?

Cobra is only responsible for paying second when you’re 65 years or older.

So they have to pay only 20% after Medicare pays.

That is essential to have set up from the moment you retire, so you have no claims issues.

Your special election period begins from the month you retire and runs for eight months to enroll in Medicare Part B.

So you do have A limited time – eight months – to enroll in Medicare Part B from the time you retire. If you have any questions about this issue, feel free to give us a call.
