Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

Original Medicare is the traditional fee-for-service health plan provided to seniors by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Medicare Part A is your hospital insurance. It covers care at hospitals and skilled nursing facilities.

Medicare Part B is your medical insurance. It covers things like doctor visits and labs.

Both parts A and B have high deductibles and coinsurance, which is why most people with Original Medicare also purchase a Medicare supplement called a Medigap policy.

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C allows you to purchase your Medicare-covered health benefits from a private insurance company. These policies are called Medicare Advantage Plans and they bundle inpatient care, outpatient care, and, in many cases, prescription drug coverage together into a single plan. When you enroll in Medicare Part C you are not allowed to purchase a separate Medigap plan.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D provides your prescription drug coverage. If you have Original Medicare you will purchase your Part D coverage from a private insurance company. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, your Part D coverage may be included with that plan.
